Multicolor Tourmaline Crystal | Rubellite, Purple, Achroite & Blue Cap with Cat's Eye | Paprok Mine, Nuristan, Afghanistan
A Study in Rarity — Feature by Feature
This tourmaline from the Paprok Mine in Nuristan, Afghanistan is not a one-feature piece. It is a convergence of several independently rare characteristics, each of which would make a crystal collectible on its own. Together, they make this specimen genuinely difficult to categorize — and nearly impossible to replicate.
The Color Journey
The crystal opens at the base with a rich rubellite red, transitions into an uncommon purple zone — already rare in tourmaline — then clears into a pristine achroite (colorless) zone before closing with a distinct blue cap at the termination. Subtle blue speckling near the termination adds a final layer of visual texture that reads as both natural and aesthetically intentional.
The Cat's Eye Effect
Portions of this crystal exhibit a cat's eye (chatoyancy) effect — a silky, reflective band caused by parallel needle-like inclusions within the crystal. In tourmaline, this optical phenomenon is sought after and relatively uncommon, adding a tactile, light-interactive quality that photographs only partially capture.
